Since 2008, with the spread of the financial crisis,the international shipping market was continuously in a downturn, shipping companies could not afford the huge operating costs and ship building costs, also the ship delivery lagging risks. Meanwhile, the traditional manufacturing industry is facing difficulties of transformation and upgrading. In 2012, with a sharp decline of new orders for shipyards, the shipbuilding industry was in the winter and very difficult to sustain. A new set of design, finance, service and manufacturing as one of the new ship financing lease business model was created timely and successful applied, among the world’s shipping giant CMA CGM, CIMC and Chinese shipyards, and quickly became to a suitable business benchmarking innovation model for the ship building industry to follow. This is the set of large intelligent green container ship (9200TEU) project, designed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), CIMC financial leasing company as the owner, CMA CGM as the charterer, by providing the design, finance,manufacturing and other services for an integrated solution. Currently, the signing of 109200TEU container vessels has all been delivered.In this paper, taking the 9200TEU container vessel as the example, the structural characteristics and design contents of large container ships were studied. The main contents are:Firstly,the structural characteristics of twin island layout container vessel were studied and the main differences and its influences between twin island container vessel and a single island were compared, also its influences on still water bending moments and shear forces;Secondly, introduced the application of hull structural steels with yield strength of 390 N/mm2 and 460 N/mm2 and its characteristics, and the limitation of its application in the large container vessels. Also the technical problem which may arise during the usage was studied,and gave application suggestion of 460 steel in the 9200TEU container vessel’s hull structure;Then, introduced the method of how to determine the maximum bending moment in the initial design stage, the structure characteristics of midship section, etc., and how to verify the strength characteristics of hull girder transverse sections based on Bureau Veritas (BV)structure rules, including the normal stresses induced by vertical bending moments, shear stresses induced by vertical shear forces;Finally,the finite element analysis on the strength of the vessel was introduced; including 3 cargo holds FEM analysis, global finite element analysis and fatigue strength analysis.Especially the yield strength and buckling strength of the main structure were assessed, and the fatigue strength check were also carried out for several key positions, to verify whether it meets the requirements of the fatigue life.
