Generative Architectural Design Based On Genetic Algorithm

In recent years,programming is no longer the sole ownership of programmers,nonprofessionals,like architects,can also design some simple program on visual interface by using the advanced programming language?These programs not only can replace architects on some repetitive works,but also can let computer to generate project automatically.This article talks about this new field of CAAD:the Generative Architectural Design,and the sunshade of Beijing sliding center will be used as a typical example to discuss this method in detail.What's more,the genetic algorithm is used as the core method in this design.Compare to the traditional design process,which includes "analysis","synthesis" and "evaluation" three steps,in the new process of generative architectural design,instead of generate the design by themselves,architects can now set some rules and let computers to generate plenty alternatives.For some typical architectures,Generative Architectural Design has an additional advantage,it can merge some part of the "evaluation" into the "synthesis" part at the beginning of design,which will improve the quality of the outcome.By designing the sunshade of sliding center,I will explore the process and method of using Generative Architectural Design,discuss how to transform the different requests into parameters and how to design proper evaluation function.The outcome of this design will show us the advantages and disadvantages of using Generative Architectural Design to design complex system.This article consists of four part,the first chapter talks about the advantage and significance of Generative Architectural Design.The second chapter introduces the basic information of the Beijing sliding center.The third part introduces the design strategy,which includes the sectional prototype design,the transform of the prototype from 2d drawing to parameters and the research of evaluation function.The fourth chapter shows the final works,which includes the final program,the verification of the program,the drawings of sunshade architecture generated from the program and the correspondent structure.What' s more,the writer also concludes the change rules of every sunshade component and the trades-offs of Generative Architectural Design.
