This is a time of visual consumption, which witnesses the declining interest in the spirit of architecture, and almost all kinds of arts have turned consumer-oriented.Architecture,as a category of art, whose spirit behind the form and style is worth reviewing.Louis I Kahn was one of the greatest architects in 20 th Century. He's not only a architect, but also a philosopher, whose architecture demonstrates the spiritual qualities. His architectural philosophy was a complete theoretical system, and his architecture was an essential component of that.In Kahn's philosophy and his works, light has always played a significant role.As the research on natural light has become hot in recent years,Kahn has always been nonnegligible in this topic. However, since his language was often thought to be involved and abstruse,a specialised research on Kahn's light theory and works is still in need.On the basis of Kahn's philosophy, especially the light theory and related works, the thesis aims to reveal the spiritual qualities behind the form and style of architecture, reflect the spirit behind his architecture, and his unique design method, show his positive meaning. The thesis is composed of three parts: I.it reveals the influencing factors of the formation of Kahn's architectural philosophy;II.By anglicizing his original words, reveal the relationship among the main conceptions in his philosophy;III.Through the comparison and analysis of the natural light theory and the work of Louis Kahn, reveal the inseparable relationship between the theory and the works, discuss the important role of light in the expression of the spirit of his architectural philosophy and works, along with his main way of natural light control.
