Study Of River Landscape Design Of Xinchang Ancient Town Based On The Genius Loci Theory

It is an era with rapid economic development, fast urbanization, and under such circumstance, the urban landscape changes fast. With fast-paced life, people pursue more and more in spiritual world. However, the rapid development of the city causes spiritual loss. Under such background, it is an important issue for designers to consider how to make urban planning and landscape design to meet people’s needs about space environment.Salt industry is closely related to the economic development of Xinchang Ancient Town. The spirit of The Town is contained in water pattern, salt culture, folk traditions and the unique dwellings built in boom period. With the guidance of the Genius Loci Theory, this paper aims to study the river landscape of the ancient town, then puts forward the design principles of river landscape. On the basis of above research, this paper intends to do the river landscape design of Xinchang Ancient Town as follows:(1) To design four landscape belts: Hongqiao Port Sightseeing and Recreation Belt, Dongheng Port Fishing Belt, Back City River Characteristics Belt, and Baoqiao Port Original Area. (2) To strengthen the sense of identity of Xinchang Ancient Town, including restore the characteristic of dwelling forms on the concept alongside the Back City River, and set several landscape walls which is carved with Aobo Drawing along with Baoqiao Port. (3) To strengthen the sense of direction of The Town, including design the guidance system. With these methods, the study aims to keep the spirit of Xinchang Ancient Town alive.The purpose of this paper is to discuss how to protect and retain the spirit through the river landscape design, on the other hand, the aim is to study how to carry on the effective transmission and reconstruction between ancient town and modern design.
