With the growth of economy and the continuously deepening of internationalization, China's aviation industry develops rapidly, tremendous development of the air transport industry led to a significant increase in airport traffic, in addition. To improve airport efficiency, reduce the workload of the traffic controller, having an accurate and timely positioning of the moving target is the key task. MLAT is a new technology in aircraft positioning, with high accuracy and update rate, cost-effective, low cost of operation and maintenance, anti-fraud and other characteristics. Based on Innsbruck Airport and Beijing Capital Airport MLAT system, TDOA multilateration algorithm and GDOP performance was researched in this paper. The background and significance of this thesis was introduced. There was an overall presentation of multilateration positioning system. TOA and TDOA multilateration algorithms were outlined as well as its strengths and weakness. The principle of TDOA location algorithm and 6 classical algorithms were highlighted. Based on the Innsbruck Airport real MLAT system, these 6 classical algorithms were simulated and compared. An optimized algorithm based on regularization theory was proposed and validated by simulation. Taking into account the number and layout of the ground station system performance will have a significant impact on the multi-point positioning system, the paper described the GDOP, in-depth studied the GDOP calculations and the factors influencing GDOP distribution. To improve the practical application of the research, the runway layout of Beijing Capital Airport was briefly introduced. The positioning error and GDOP distribution of its MLAT Approach Surveillance system were firstly simulated and analyzed, based on which the new station layout was proposed.
