There are a large amount of existing residential buildings in China, but most of them have low insulation level or even no insulation. With the improvement of people's living standard, the requirements of radiant heating and cooling devices which can offer comfortable living environment, become increasingly vigorous. It's difficult to install traditional radiant heating and cooling system in low insulation existing residential buildings, and that will lead to severe energy waste. The modular radiant panel system designed for existing residential buildings should be emerged as the demands. This paper explicated the system, structure, materials, connection and installation of the modular radiant panels for thermal upgrade of existing residential buildings with product design sketch and installation example. There are three types of the new modular radiant panels:HCIV(Heating, Cooling, Insulation and Ventilation) radiant panel, auxiliary radiant panel, supplementary radiant panel. The HCIV radiant panel contains insulation panel which have insulation function and ventilation cavity, biomass concrete and water pipe layer which have heating and cooling effect, magnesium oxide panel which have fireproofing and structure effect. After introducing the structure and materials of the modular radiant panel, we got the running parameters of the radiant panel installed on the exterior wall with the building envelop thermal simulation software CHAMPS-BES. The results show that the modular radiant panel works well in low heating or cooling load condition and no condensation. In high heating load condition, we need higher supply water temperature as the high insulation level of the biomass concrete. So we should improve the material properties of the biomass concrete in the future. In high cooling load condition, the power of the modular radiant panel is not enough, therefore we need auxiliary cooling method. The EnergyPlus software simulation results and related papers demonstrated the modular radiant panel can save energy for existing residential buildings. The insulation of the radiant panel and the exhaust air energy recovery system are the main reasons for energy saving.
