Construction investment of core rock-fill dam is significant and its construction condition is very complicated, related to earthwork planning, construction filling work, transportation, machinery rational distribution of transportation and excavation, and construction diversion etc. The construction of core rock-fill dam is affected by the weather and other external natural environment, so its process has strong randomness and dynamics. It is difficult to analyze this process through establishment of a simple mathematical model. It is also hard to describe the complex construction conditions through two-dimensional drawings or chart data and make timely discovery of the construction conflict. Above all, it is vital to combine the construction simulation with 3D visualization technology to display the construction process vividly, and to form a dynamic simulation of core rock-fill dam construction process. These are important to assist core rock-fill dam construction management, and to make a decision-making basis for construction design, schedule control and project management.Construction management level has a great impact on construction standard for core rock-fill dam. The construction dynamic simulation of core rock-fill dam can provide strong support for the construction management. At present most researches of construction dynamic simulation were to create a 3D visualization system based on the simulation results, however, the existing 3D models couldn't easily be modified and only provided limited construction information, To solve these problems, CATIA has been introduced into the modeling of construction simulation for core rock-fill dam, moreover, a 4D model dynamic simulation framework for core rock-fill dam was put forward based on the CATIA platform. Firstly hydropower project construction scene has been built on this platform, using many key technologies including skeleton design, parametric technology, knowledge engineering and modular design technology etc. And the 3D model of core rock-fill dam built in parametric technique could solve the difficult issues such as model updating. Then the 3D model with extended attribute based on secondary development not only provided construction scene, but also provided shape parameters, road node information and other construction information. Finally the construction 4D model of core rock-fill dam was built and realized on CATIA platform combined with an engineering project, and using 3D XML technology for data conversion, the remote interactive of 4D construction model for the core rock-fill dam based on B/S was also achieved, which offered theoretical and technical support for construction management.
