| Under the new urbanization background, the small and medium-sized cities will become key battlegrounds for the construction of urbanization. Small cities are the bridges to connect rural and urban areas, and the quantity and quality of small cities are becoming a solid base and backbone of the urban structure. By 2009, small cities had contributed 10.75% of China's urbanization rate, which means small cities are facing unprecedented development opportunities,they are more plastic and reformative. The comprehensive urban design of small cities is particularly important. However, the present stage of the comprehensive urban design has not yet formed as a complete system in which case small cities are lack of comprehensive urban design. Therefore, further exploration is needed to lead the practice.In accordance with current trends of small cities under the background of new urbanization, the article analyses the present development of small cities and summarizes the characteristics of small cities in China in four aspects, which are unique features, clear spatial structure, simple life style and time-based construction. The article finds out problems in the urban design of small cities through the analysis of comparing typical small city's urban design cases. It states four strategies that are suitable for the comprehensive urban design of small cities. The Strategies are to define values and principles, clarify functions, connect with statutory plans and build project-binding guide. On this basis, the article determines the comprehensive urban design ideas and the process for small cities. It claims that the design of small cities should be divided in two levels. Content and requirements of the design are also listed in the article.At last, the comprehensive urban design of this article will be applied to Shunping County. The aim of the practice is to provide methods and references for future urban designs from both the success and deficiency of this project. |
