Up to now,239 national geoparks have been established in China,of which 35 have become the UNESCO Global Geoparks. The establishment of the geoparks has played important role in strengthening the protection of geoheritage, popularizing geology knowledge and promoting the sustainable development of local economy. Many scholars had studied geoparks in different aspects, but the overall situation of the geoparks is lacked. Therefore, based on the situation of China's national geoparks, this paper explores the origin of the development of the national geoparks by collecting data, field investigation, reviewing literature and quantitative analysis.Furthermore, this paper analyzes the characteristics of the national geoparks from the aspects of geoheritage type and geopark's scale, and explores the causes of the features from the geological background and human factors.Combining the conclusion with the present situation of the national geoparks,a perspective analysis on the development of national geoparks is made.Through the above research, this paper draws the following conclusions:(1)According to the latest standard and data, the geoparks are divided into categories. There are 27 geoparks for geological(stratigraphic)section,14 for geological structure,40 for paleontology,1 for mineral and deposits,211 for geomorphology,20 for water landscapes, and 8 for environmental geological relics. The Pacific and Indian plate dive to the Asian plate, which plays a decisive role in the formation of geoheritage in China. And then, regional geological activities, combining with geological events and human activities mainly affect the geoheritage.(2)China's national geoparks are unevenly distributed and highly concentrated.National Geopark application shows "government-led" features, but the management of geoparks is mostly outsourcing.Compared with the United States National Park, the management of China's national geoparks is dispersed, lacking of strong financial and legal support.Hence, the US national park model can't be directly applied to manage the China's national geoparks.(3)At present, the main problems in the development of geoparks in China are: excessive growth, lack of professional talents,cross-system management and cross-regional management. In the future, national geoparks should learn from the requirements of the construction of the global geopark, and establish an interaction mode between the government and community to strengthen the construction of geology popularization.
