The tribe Winthemiini(Diptera: Tachinidae)of subfamily Exoristinae are mainly parasitic on larvae of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera,or on adults of Coleoptera etc.Winthemiini is an important group of natural enemy insects(particularly larval Lepidoptera)in most terrestrial ecological communities(regions in natural grasslands and woods,or agriculture and forestry). The diagnostic characters of Winthemiini are following as: first postsutural supra-alar bristle longer than notopleural bristles and usually longer than first postsutural intra-alar bristle;postpronotum with five bristles, the three strongest of them arranged in a triangle;katepimeron with hairs on its anterior two-thirds or more.Winthemiini is a worldwidely distributed group. It is known that Winthemiini has about 180 species of 15 genera in the world. In this study, about 1280 specimens of Winthemiini in the Insect Collection of Shenyang Normal University and other research institutes and universities of China collected from 24 Provinces,Autonomous Regions and Muncipal Cities of China were examined and classified,a checklist and distributions of 42 species of Winthemiini included 3 genera from China are recognized,in which Smidtia liaoningensis sp.nov.was new to science and 4 species are newly recorded for China: Nemorilla floralis(Meigen,1824),Smidtia amurensis Borisova,1962,S.antennalis Shima,1996 and S.pauciseta Shima,1996 from Liaoning(published);26 new provincial distributions of 16 species of Winthemiini are provided;diagnostic figures of 24 species are given;a key to the genera of Winthemiini and keys to the species of three Winthemiini genera are given.About 56,000 words, about 177 photos and 68 references in this study. The specimens examined of Winthemiini are mainly deposited in the Insect Collection of Sheyang Normal University(SYNU).
