This paper preliminary summarized the history of entomology in the region of Hebei(including Beijing and Tianjin) according to the ancient stage(before 1840), modern stage(1840-1949) and contemporary stage(1950-2014). In this region, people have developed agriculture long ago, and the geographical conditions are suitable for insects to survive, so insects have been closely related to humans since the ancient times. In the studies of ancient entomology history, this paper mainly summarized the development and utilization of the resource insects(silkworm, bee, medical insects, edible insects), the records of pest infestation(locust, Mythimna separata, borer, etc.)and insect culture. The historical records and characteristics of locust plague were mainly researched. In modern China, while the first batch of scholars that studied entomology in western countries came back to China, the education and research of entomology were truly established. But limited by the social conditions, the development of entomological research was very difficult, and the foundation of entomology was weak. With the founding of People's Republic of China, the development of entomology surged forward and all kinds of research literature emerged in endlessly. 2457 articles discussed were published by dominant periodicals of national wide in the late 65 years, which were analyzed in this study using the methodology of bibliometrics. With being retrieved, organized, classified, and counted, it was investigated of their philology characteristics i.e. the annual statistics, the group of resea rch materials, study areas, research institutions as well as the study trend, which helps understand the development of sub-disciplines of entomology.
