In the modern history of China, geology knowledge provides the intelligent support for industrialization and modernization. The next two decades are crucial for the future of China, in which to solve the problems of ecology, environment and resource facing China society nowadays, to realize the sustainable development and to take a new road to industrialization need the further intelligent support coming from the forefront knowledge of modern geology. Therefore, to study systematically the knowledge growth of geology in the modern times and the contemporary days of China could reveal the inner logic and motive power of it, and could offer the reference to the development of geology system, consequently could satisfy the various needs in the future. The paper, by adopting the methods of biblio-metrics and scientific metrology, based on analyzing the journal papers published in geology from 1936 to 2006, describing the knowledge growth of geology in China on the facet of quantity and velocity and the change of division of the disciplines, attempts to reveal the inner logic and the motive powers of the knowledge growth of geology in the modern times and the contemporary days of China. The paper includes six parts. The first chapter introduced the research problems and its meaning, the aims of the research, the data source and the methodology, and definitions of relative concepts. The second chapter gave the relative research about scientific knowledge a comprehensive retrospection. The thesis of scientific knowledge growth is a proposition containing rich meanings. From the perspectives of scientific philosophy, history of science and sociology of science, the researches include the growth model, the law and the motive powers of scientific knowledge growth. Based on the review, the paper will adopt the methodology from it to analyze the data and explain the results. The third chapter analyzed the data. Based on the data collected and sorted, the procedure of geology knowledge growth in China from 1936 to 2006 could be divided into five stages. The fourth chapter studied the interest center transferred among the divisions of geology in China stage by stage. On the ground of the research results of it, the paper summarized the development and change of the discipline system. Consequently, the development procedures of geology knowledge growth were compared between in China and in the world. The fifth chapter discussed the motive powers of knowledge growth of geology in the modern times and the contemporary days in China. The motive powers exist inside and outside of geology, acting as different role in the development procedure. The sixth chapter suggested some advices for the further development of geology in the future in China.According to the studies above, the paper presented findings. First, the disciplines about resource occupied the interest center through the development procedure. Different from the development procedure of geology in the world which started from the traditional discipline system focused on the disciplines about resource changed to the modern discipline system focused on the environment, the discipline system of geology in China transferred from the traditional discipline system focused on the disciplines about resource to the modern discipline system focused on both the environment and resource. Second, the motive powers coming from inside and outside of geology promote the knowledge growth of geology, but the motive powers coming from the outside of geology play the important role in which. On the other side, the powers block the knowledge growth existing in the inside and outside of geology. Finally, based on the findings, the paper suggested that geology in China was not influential in the world. At the end of the paper some advices are rendered. The innovation of the paper is studied the scientific knowledge growth from the perspective of discipline, which is unusual in the history of disciplines research and the geology history research. The methodology adopted in the paper includes biblio-metrics and scientific metrology, which is unusual in the geology history research too.
