A Study On Io Chou And The Development Of Modern Entomology In China

IO CHOU(1912-2008),a professor in the college of plant protection of the North West Agriculture and Forestry University,had been considered to be an international entomologist and the founders of entomology career in China.He made great contributions in the field of insect classification,prevention and control of agricultural pests,who had been take researches on more than 20 insect groups and published a series of books.IO CHOU also put forward some unique controlling measures in the aspect of Wheat Midge and other agricultural insect pests.At his old age,he focused on the study of the butterfly and drafted the Chinese name of the the Chinese butterfly's family,genus,species and subspecies,which laid the foundations for the unity and systematization of the Chinese butterfly's name.He also put the research of the history of Chinese entomology to a new stage,took more than 20 years to write The Chinese History Of Entomology,which was called"immortal works"by European and American 's scholars.In addition to his significant achievements in the field of entomology,IO CHOU also founded the Research Institute Of Insects,the Insect Museum,the Tianze Publisher and the Entomotaxonomia,he also established the insects will interest,the butterfly branch of the Entomological society of China and the Entomological Taxonomist Reward Fund.Due to IO CHOU's outstanding achievements,he wined the title of "The National Model Worker" in the year of 1979.1n 1985,he was elected the academician in the international academy of sciences of the Republic of SAN Marino.In 1995,Asia Fund For Agricultural Development awarded him the honorary title of "Asian agricultural luminaries".In 2001,he won the"Science and Technology Progress Award" of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.IO CHOU made a great contribution in the fields of science,which based on his scientific literacy and humanities.IO CHOU's scientific literacy performance in his emphasis on theory and practice,focusing on academic exchanges and cooperation,academic independence and academic equality of scientific ideas and innovation,pursuit,rigorous and realistic,hard work and unremitting scientific spirit.His scientific thought has distinctive characteristics of the times,and tap his scientific ideas are helpful to make a philosophical reflection on his scientific achievements.And the spirit of science not only gave him power to do research,but also held his constantly breakthroughs in scientific exploration,and then he accomplished carving worm.10 CHOU's humanities major accomplishment reflected in three areas,namely literature and history,artistic,and humanistic spirit.Due to the influence of traditional culture,10 CHOU has attainments in the field of literature,which has laid a foundation for his research in the history of science on cross fusion of science and humanities.In addition,he also had a lot of achievements in the field of art,he was drawing the insects clever combination of science and art together,called a piece of art,which makes the artistic accomplishments during his studies to broaden his vision.Patriotic,amiable support him to achieve great academic achievement,making IO CHOU even after many political movements,physically and mentally tortured,but never give up the pursuit of science,until the last moment of his life.As an early Chinese entomologist,during his 70 years' teaching,10 CHOU,who formed a methodical and distinctive academic spectrum,cultivated three generations of entomology talents for the country.His disciples inherited his academic career and delivered his thoughts and spirit to the descendants,...
