Currently, the China’s domestic tourism has been developing rapidly. The incessant improvement of the infrastructures urges furious competitions among regions, especially the neighboring cities. Problems such as how to improve its competitiveness, how to reasonably avoid competitions and how to achieve win-win through effective cooperation have become much more important in the development of city tourism.A city, like natural organism, is also a dynamic organism in the system. Hence, theories of bio-ecology can be applied into the field of city tourism which is used to explore the relation between city and city tourism in order to formulate scientific strategies for the development of tourism. Based on the niche overlap theory and niche situation theory, an evaluation system and a judgement framework of city tourism niche have been constructed. On the basis of these theories, nine major cities of Chang-Ji-Tu Pilot Zone have been taken as research objects. To begin with, the author applied the ecological niche theory to calculate and evaluate the complementary niche of the nine cities. Next, based on the niche overlap theory, the author figured out the result of the the degree of overlapping of the nine cities as well as the evaluation of each city’s niche overlap. Finally, according to the results, development strategies of each city and Chang-Ji-Tu have been put forward.Main research results are as followings:(1) The niche concept of tourism has been put forward. Through the illustration of niche situation theory and its actual appliance, the author believes that the city tourism niche includes two aspects. One is the status and function of city tourism occupies in its regional tourism system. The other is the relationship between one city and other cities in the regional tourism system.(2) A complementary niche evaluation system of city tourism has been constructed regarding the nine major cities of Chang-Ji-Tu taken as research objects. According to the summary of the precedent researches and the current situation of Chang-Ji-Tu, the author constructed four dimensions, the dimension of resource condition, the dimension of tourism market, the dimension of economic development and the dimension of ecotour, and an evaluation system which includes 23 evaluation index factors.(3) An empirical analysis has been conducted regarding the nine major cities of Chang-Ji-Tu taken as research objects. Firstly, the author calculates the niche situation of these nine cities through the niche situation theory. Evaluation factors between 2010 and 2014, which is applied in the calculation of the niche situation, have been collected. Then, according to the cluster analysis through SPSS22.0, the nine cities have been classified into 3 categories. Secondly, through the appliance of niche overlap theory, the degree of overlap can be calculated. According to the figure, the overlap matrix of the niche situation has been constructed.(4) Strategies for the development and integrity of regional tourism in each city of Chang-Ji-Tu are provided according to the calculation. With such a calculation and niche theory, this research presents a general strategic route for the nine cities in Chang-Ji-Tu and specific strategies accordingly for each city. What’s more, this research provides detailed information about the integrity of regional tourism in Chang-Ji-Tu, together with blueprints including a tourist spatial layout, a multilayer transport system featured as " 4 spots connected with multiple lines in 2 layers", as well as a coordinated supervising system in Chang-Ji-Tu region. The strategic route and the blueprints provided by this research may shed light on the integrity of Chang-Ji-Tu.
