Limited development ecological zones are tough regions to implement the the main functional strategy, promote the construction of ecological civilization, coordinate human-environment interactions and realize the sustainable development. Research on regional spatial pattern and developing mechanism in limited development ecological zones has important theoretical and practical significance to challenge problems of regional sustainable development. In this study, take limited development ecological zones in Ningxia as the study area, hold the perspective of scale transformation, base on statistics and field survey data of 8 countries,27 towns and 30 typical villages, use integration entropy method, TOPSIS, ESDA, PCA, PRA and other methods, construct three-dimensional evaluation model of regional Ecosystem-Society-Economy(ESE), adopt ArcGIS10.0 spatial data management platform and SPSS 18.0 data analysis software, to explore regional development levels spatial pattern and mechanism from three spatial scale county, town and village, and in accordance with the basic features and the main drivers of regional development, propose development mode and strategy suitable for different regions of the study area. Research shows:(1)On the county scale, the integrated development level, economic, social and ecological development level have the same spatial feature:northeast best, southern better and then central region. Selected 8 counties belong to 6 different types of development, both the lower levels of low ecological-medium social-low economic development type and the higher levels of medium ecological-high social--high economic development type. Economic factors have a major contribution to county development; followed by are agriculture development factors and social development factors; ecological factors and government policy factors also have a significant impact on regional development.(2)On the town scale, in three different type of limited development ecological zones, comprehensive development level of Yanchi present spatial characteristics of Northeast>Western>Southern region, Pengyang Midwest>Eastern region, Jingyuan Central>Southern>Northern region. Selected 27 towns belong to 14 different types of development, regional development type shows big regional differences. Ecological environmental factors have a major contribution to town development, followed by is the regional economic development level, social undertakings, infrastructure and market-oriented level have significant impact on regional development. (3)On village scale, the integrated development level of regional economic, social and ecological presents spatial characteristics of valley region superior than mountain villages. Selected 30 typical villages belong to low ecological-low social-low economic development type, medium ecological-low social-low economic development type and medium ecological-medium social-low economic development type and other 8 different development types. Economic and social factors are core driving force of village development; regional factors are key driving force; ecological factors and environmental factors are basic driving force; self-organization and market conditions are important driving force of village development.(4)Development modes suitable for the study area include 2 first-class modes of exogenous-oriented mode and endogenous-oriented mode,4 second-class modes of urban and rural coordination, policy support, industrial development and professional market organization mode,9 third-class modes of new-type urbanization, beautiful countryside construction, labor export-led and others. In the particular process of development, government can enhance intra-regional development capacity by strengthening ecological protection and construction, using internal advantages of ecological resources, developing modern agriculture and eco-tourism actively, strengthening investment in education, enhancing human capital, improving town’s professional market and other ways, and meanwhile, make full use of external resources, seeking support of national policy, funding, projects, technology and other aspects, improving public services and infrastructure, developing ecological compensation industry and other green industry, to promote regional ecological, social and economic systems harmonization.
