Currently, It is very obvious that large-scale phenomenon of the rapid expansion of urban construction land in many cities of China are out of the standard. According to statistics, the urban construction land area of China is 22113.66 km2 in 2000. The urban construction land area reached 47108.5 km2 with an increase of more than 1 times in 2013. However, during this period, the urban population has increased by only 17%. The growth of urban construction land is over six times to the growth of urban population. This expansion is not only the trend of urban construction land, especially agricultural land resources protection of China’s land resources has posed a serious pressure, but also lead to the development of the city itself disordered inefficient. Discussion on how to control the current situation of urban construction land sprawl effectively has become imperative. This study attempted to reveal the impact of China’s land market development of urban construction land expansion. This has important theoretical and practical significance for the in-depth understanding of the driving mechanism of Chinese urban construction land change and effectively guide the rational expansion of urban construction land. This paper discusses the impact of land market development mechanism of urban construction land expansion and then study the current situation and the relationship between them. The study area are 256 major cities in 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) of mainland China and the study period is 2000-2012. Then we empirical land market development of urban construction land expansion in the role of path and the degree of influence by using panel data model and spatial econometric models. The results are as follows:(1) In theory, development of China’s land market will inhibit the expansion of urban construction land. On the one hand, with the development of the land market, fully competitive market and price factors will inhibit the expansion of urban construction land; on the other hand, more open and transparent transfer Information also makes land prices more reasonable, so as to optimizing the expansion of urban construction land through the price mechanism.(2) The relationship between Chinese land market development and urban construction land expansion show that:First, China’s land market, with significant development and improvement in the 21 st century; Second, the Chinese city sprawl phenomenon of land for construction is still quite serious, and significant interaction effect this expansion exists in space; Third, China’s land market development and urban construction land expansion has a significant negative correlation. But in the different type of the city, this association there are some differences. Municipalities and provincial cities showing significant positive correlation, while the average level cities are showing significant negative correlation.(3) Empirical results indicate that:Firstly, we introduce spatial panel data model to build a good space factor corrects the estimates of ordinary panel data model. Secondly, the overall effect shows that the development of China’s land market for urban construction land expansion has played a significant inhibition; Thirdly, from different stages of development before and after 2005 the land market point show that, the land market development before 2005 for the inhibition of urban construction land expansion is not obvious. But after 2005, this inhibitory effect can be revealed (stage effect); Finally, from the point of view of different types of cities, municipalities and provincial cities urban construction land expansion constrained by the price factor and do not constrained by the level of the land market. Urban construction land expansion of prefecture-level city constrained by the level of the land market, but the price mechanism does not produce the corresponding inhibitory effect (urban effect). At last, based on the results of the theoretical and empirical analysis, we suggest that perfecting the land market system and its operational mechanism and reduce government intervention in the land market and explore the city of differentiated development mechanism.
