| China is the world’s largest hog producer, its annual slaughtering number, inventory and total pork production are among the toppest in the world, and Sichuan is China’s largest pork producing and sales base. However, the current pig production situation in Sichuan is not optimistic. In order to improve the efficiency of pig production in Sichuan, meet the demand of people for high yield and high quality pork, Sichuan Province responds to the call of national policy positively, and has achieved by the backyard model to standardization, specialization scale farming model transformation gradually. In this critical period of transition, how to choose the optimum pig scale farming model to improve the efficiency of pig production in Sichuan, attaches great importance to the development of Pig industry in Sichuan province and even China.In this paper, the theoretical efficiency, economies of scale theory have been applied to the study of Sichuan pig production,based on the DEA and the 2004-2012 year’s pig input and output time series data of Sichuan, the author makes a comprehensive measure and analysis for backyard pigs, small scale, medium scale and large scale farming model’s production efficiency in Sichuan, in order to identify the optimum efficiency of breeding patterns by comparing the size of each breeding’s technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. On this basis, the author compares the production efficiency of sichuan to other farming provinces, trying to find out a reasonable way to select the best breeding scale and improve the efficiency of pig production in Sichuan.The results showed that:(1) The pig production situation of sichuan is not optimistic. limited producing technology, outdated disease control as well as market fluctuation have great impact on the development of Sichuan’s pig industry. tyear 2007 was a turning point in the development of the pig industry of Sichuan;(2) Status of pig farming of Sichuan province is more obvious, the pig raising scale gradually increased. But there are still some gaps compared to other farming province like Shandong and Henan. Compared with the traditional mode of farmers backyard, the modern large-scale farming has more advantages;(3)Each pig breeding patterns of Sichuan has been in DEA invalid stage for a long time. And the main cause of not achieving the production efficiency is that the scale did not achieve an effective hog production, secondary causes of inefficiency is that the technology has not been fully exert; (4) during 2004-2012, among Sichuan pig breeding patterns which shows highest average technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, scale efficiency and the effective DEA years is the medium scale mode; and it also display a smallest gap between mode’s average production efficiency with Shandong and Henan. It can be seen that the current optimal pig farming scale of Sichuan is the scale model.In conclusion, the following policy recommendations can be made:(1) Improve the pig disease control system, establishment the risk management mechanisms for pig farming;(2) Develope appropriate pig raising scale and gradually realize the transition to large-scale farming from backyard style; (3) Intensify efforts to promote pig farming technology, Improve the applications efficiency of pig breeding technology; (4) Put forward the rapid development of feed industry, pursue the scientific feeding and comprehensive management. |
