Study On Brics Export Complexity And Its Determinants

As the representative of the emerging economies and developing countries, BRICS countries’ status in the world economy is constantly rising. With the rapid development of economy, the BRICS countries’ foreign trade appears to be booming, and as one of its member China’s trade volume has ranked first. Actually, the volume of a country export cannot comprehensively reflect its export quality, so this paper in-depth analyzes the characteristics and influencing factors of the BRICS export complexity, which has vital and practical significance to BIRCS especially China’s export structure optimization and sustainable development.Firstly, this paper summarizes and organizes existing export complexity measurement methods and literatures about determinants. Secondly, establish a database sample period of 2001-2012 to measure the export complexity of the BRICS, in comparison with export complexity among BRICS to analyze the position and trends in which the complexity of Chinese exports. Thirdly, based on the theoretical analysis, include the factors in the measurement model so as to do the empirical analysis determinants of export complexity. Finally, put forward some constructive proposals to enhance the complexity of a country’s export path.The main conclusions are as follows: Firstly, BRICS countries show rapid economic growth, and its foreign trade share is increasing continuously. Secondly, Since 2001, the export complexity of BRICS shows rapid growth, and China has a certain gap compared with other member states, but it has big potential for growth. Thirdly, GDP per capita impact on the country’s exports of high complexity greater than the lower complexity of the national exports; Higher stock of human capital can absorb technology spillover caused by export trade, so as to improve its technology content of export.We should be concerned about export trade volume expansion, and at the same time be more aware of the importance of export quality. BRICS especially China in optimizing the export structure should increase the degree of domestic innovation and technology-intensive products, and improve the added value of exports. BRICS should not only rely on its own natural resources, but also exert research and development efforts and refine the relevant laws and regulations.
