| In1876, Wuhu was opened as a trading port.The opening affected every aspect ofsocial life of the Wanjiang area,especially in economic filed,and gradually formed aeconomic circle,which Wuhu as the center then radiated throughout the Wanjiang area.The paper aims to analyse the development of morden handicraft industry of Wanjiangarea, based on the backgrdound of the opening.The area had the congenital condition to develop handicraft industry,and theopenning was an opportunity. There were many changes in handicraft industry of the areawith the openning, which was gradually connected with the world market.The import andexport trade of Wuhu had huge influence on the handicraft industry of the area:todifferent degrees.Some industry failed because of the imported goods; and,somedeveloped labyrinthian.So new handicraft industry departments emerged and also sometraditional handicraft arts were handed down. These changes reflected the requirements ofthe market and the formation of the world market. With the new conditions, the handicraftindustry of Wanjiang area changed from cottage industry and manufakture,gradually newtrends emerged, just as the capitalist mode of production and the modern managementmethod. In addition,the handicraft trade system gradually break away from the feudalsystem and established modern business organization, which made a greater contributionto the handicraft industry.Compared to the machine industry, the handicraft industry is still in the leadingposition in the industry in the modern times in wanjiang area.It posessed many varietiesand improved the manual products’commercialization level and urban-rural interaction.But the unbalanced development in different areas and departments of the handicraftindustry of Wanjiang area was a problem,and it’s a common feature of urban-rural areaecnomic structure.Caused by a series of factors,the low standard of handicraft industry ofWanjiang area was another problem. |
