With the reform and opening-up policies and the integration of the world economy, more and more Chinese power companies begin to compete in overseas power investment, construction, operation and service. Risk management level needs to match with the rapid development of the power industry. However, there’s a big gap between China and advanced countries in risk management, especially in risk management of overseas power construction projects. How to change the risk management model from the "out fire" to "prevention" and to fundamentally enhance the risk management level is a big problem faced by all electric power project contractors.Based on traditional risk management framework, totally 21 risk factors have been identified in construction preparation stage, construction stage and completion & acceptance stage. AHP analysis is conducted in this study to assess and forecast the risk and the risk factors are divided into four ranks. Through analyzing the characteristics of each risk rank, specific control method is given to each risk rank. Finally, this paper proposes four safeguards in power project risk management: strengthen team construction of risk management, strengthen technical risk control, maintain safety risk management and deepen overall monitoring and maintain sustained improvement.This study based on risk management of Zambia Power Project is a mirror for risk control of overseas power project and provides powerful basis for improvement of power Construction Company’s risk management level in future.
