Abstract:Recently, industrial division has evolved from inter-industry level to intra-industry and industrial chain (value chain) level at home and abroad in well developed areas. This paper took regional division of industry value chain as research perspective. Taking Beijing as an example, adopting the data of Beijing auto industry from the database of designed size enterprises in China(2001/2009),this paper divided the auto industry value chain into six parts, namely the general parts manufacturing (GPM), the core parts manufacturing (CPM), the vehicle body and trailer manufacturing (VBTM), the complete vehicle manufacturing (CVM), the re-assembled vehicle manufacturing (RVM) and vehicle repairing (VR), according to the producing process and the availability of data. It then analyzed the characteristics and main factors of territorial division of auto industry value chain in Beijing with the use of spatial analysis, niche width and cluster analysis.Furthermore, taking Beijing Hyundai Motor Co. LTD as an example, this paper used the data of demand-supply supporting relationship between suppliers and customers from China Automobile Industry Enterprises and Administrative Organizations Information Book (2013).According to the availability of data and keeping pace with the above division standard of Beijing auto industry value chain, it is divided into three parts, namely the general partsmanufacturing (GPM)(body parts, electrical apparatus parts, generic devices parts), the core partsmanufacturing (CPM)(engine parts, chassis parts) and the complete vehicle manufacturing (CVM). Then the paper analyzed the characteristics and the main factors of territorial division of auto industry value chain led by Beijing Hyundai Motor Co. LTD.The conclusions were as follows:(1)The major profit distribution of Beijing auto industry value chain does not meet the characteristics of the "smile curve" well. The value distribution of Beijing auto industry value chain indexed by average profit and profit margin fitted symmetrical "U" shape and wave-shaped curve. The value of the distribution and the type of curve are not the same because there are differences in industry specification, segment division and index selection.(2) Beijing auto industry value chain has shown the characteristics of regional division. The territorial division of auto industry value in Beijing presented the spatial distribution pattern of" Large diffusion, small agglomeration",CVM and PM in Beijing scattered from the downtown to suburb, while the repairing and modification remained in the central city area with better service function. The integration became stronger of which the major segments of Beijing auto industry value chain spatially distributes. It was also optimized about the regional combination and industrial supporting. The main factors that influenced the spatial distribution were spatial costs, industrial agglomeration, market orientation, policy regulation and technology progress.(3) The territorial division of auto industry value chain led by Beijing Hyundai and its local supporting PM companies basically presented two forms, namely containing and enclosing. CPM(engine parts and chassis parts) were scattered in Linhe Industrial Development Zone-Yang Zhen Industrial Park within or around its layout; electrical instrument parts of GPM are mainly around Linhe Industrial Development Zone-Yang Zhen Industrial Park;body parts of GPM were scattered in Linhe Industrial Development Zone-Yang Zhen Industrial Park within or away from its layout;general equipment parts are mainly around or away from Linhe Industrial Development Zone-Yang Zhen Industrial Park, spatial layout were more diffusion. The main factors that influenced the spatial distribution were company characteristics, industrial agglomeration, cultural embeddedness, policy regulation and market orientation.
