Since introduced into our country in 1998, the subject service has been the general concern of the library community. Experienced the development processes of the traditional reference service, the teaching support service, the subject information service, the information service of science and technology as well as the knowledge discovery service, the service modes vary and innovate constantly with the development of techniques. For example, part-time and full-time subject librarian service mode, the subject service mode based on users’demands, the subject service mode based on the resource platform and the embedded subject service mode and so on appear. In recent years, the evolution of the information environment leads to the characteristics of diversity and individuation of users’demands, which makes greater challenge for the subject service.With the development of the global open access movement (Access Open), the construction of the institutional repository (Institutional Repository) has become a hot topic in the library circle. The basic function of the institutional repository is to preserve various types of digital resources of institutions for a long-term, including a variety of published academic achievement information and grey literatures such as undisclosed personal notes, meeting records and test data, in order to integrate the resources of various disciplines to the greatest degree. The service function in recent years has also been the concern of scholars.Under this background, the subject service mode based on institutional repository paper is put forward. Firstly, the subject and object of the subject service are all members of the organization, who can act in the institutional repository, taking advantage of the mobile internet technique and bringing the subject service to the Internet to partially replace the face to face service. Secondly, the subject service content relates to the institutional repository resources closely, and most factual data can be extracted or dug from the institutional repository directly, which will greatly improve the efficiency of subject service. Thirdly, the strategies of subject service mainly rely on technical measures, which can effectively overcome the individual difference of the artificial services from the subject librarians.Based on the summary of the basic theory of subject service modes and the construction of institutional repository, subject service modes in forms of self-help, assisting, cooperation and interaction are investigated preliminarily relating to resources, technologies, platforms and other significant factors in view of the relationship between the features and contents of institutional repository and the subject service, focusing on the information needs of users, linking closely to the information service essentials such as main body, object, content and strategies.Studies reveal that the subject service orienting to individuals in form of self-service and assist type not only improves the service efficiency, but also effectively solves the problem of the shortage of human resources of the library. Carrying out mutual, interactive subject service is difficult; however, science service level will increase dramatically along with the increment of participation degree. The subject service mode based on the institutional repository is just one kind of various modes of service and it will be more and more mature with the development of technology.
