With the increasing development of computer technology, whether business, schools government or non-governmental organizations have a huge amount of server device for the information services, carrying a variety of applications. It is the key equipment of modern computer network-centric environment. Therefore, reliability, ease of use and manageability of servers is particularly important, and manageability is the most important. With the progress of society, the development of information, server system scale is growing. March 2016, Market research firm IDC said that last year, Alibaba the number of purchasing x86 servers almost Brazil, Tencent number of servers purchased more than the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and the number of Baidu procurement shipments, Qihoo 360 purchased and Turkey considerably.Nowadays, the server applications are growing no matter in quantity or in its influence. And traditional sever management has been hard to meet the customers’ needs. There exists some problems in the traditional server management model, such as its poor timeliness, failing to find causes when breakdown, seriously consuming server resources. The server management system proposed in this paper is based on the IPMI and under the background of the project from Intel. Existing server management system always manages servers by labor or software-based sever management. The traditional management is simple, but there are too many shortcomings, for example its inefficiency, consuming excess system resources, no cross-platform. Based on above, the Intel company needs new management system developed by its own, which can overcome the shortcoming above. The Intelligent Platform Management Interface(IPMI) is an open standard hardware management interface specification proposed jointly by Intel, DELL, HP and NEC, which defines the specific communication methods to the embedded management subsystems. The information of IPMI is conveyed by the Baseboard Management Controller(BMC), located on the hardware components of the IPMI specification. There are two major advantages by using the inferior hardware intelligent management instead of the operating system for management. Firstly, this configuration allows the server out-of-band management.Secondly, the operating systems need not transfer the system state data. Comparedwith the traditional server management model, the new server management system introduction proposed and designed in this paper has several innovative points as following. Firstly, this new server management consume few server’s operating system resources. Secondly, it can manage servers out-of-band remotely. Thirdly, this server management system can be used across platforms. The content of this article and the main work includes the following areas. Firstly, this paper gives a brief introduction to the research status in the field of server management at home and abroad firstly. After making a detailed analysis of the traditional server management, we pointed out the shortcomings of it. Secondly, the IPMI specification, the theory of the paper, was stated in detail, as well as its advantages in the server management. Thirdly, according to the actual needs of Intel company, we developed a server management system with requirements analysis. And requirements analysis is divided into functional requirements analysis as well as non-functional requirements analysis. Fourthly, after doing management system requirements analysis, we design this server management system, including the hardware and software parts of design. Finally, under the premise of the completing of the entire project, we continued to test and have a acceptance check for this sever management system.
