As a high-performance computer, a server is bearing the operation of multiple applications with key assignments and is the critical equipment in the network-centered modern computer environment. So servers should feature excellent reliability, availability, scalability, easy-usability and manageability, among which manageability offers other features with utmost extensions. As the information construction progresses, the size of server system is also bulking and the enterprises with tens of servers are quite a few. Under this condition, traditional server monitor management pattern is no longer satisfying the needs of real-time management, with the shortcomings of low time effectiveness, failure to find the cause to the server corruption, too much system resource consumption and so on.The proposition of Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) provides the possibility of implementing an intelligent management system which can offer all-day and real-time monitoring of servers, automatic alarming in case of dangerous situation, and real-time adjustment of the servers' working conditions according to different situations. IPMI protocol can both further enhance the servers' usability and serviceability, and decrease the overall possession cost for server owners and development cost for server manufactures. It has been favored by the server manufactures and owners world-wide, and become the important technical base for the sturdiness and reliability of servers. This paper designs a server management system based on IPMI protocol which can real-time monitor the servers supporting IPMI protocol and provide a solution to the centralized remote monitor and management of multiple servers within the same local area network. As long as the server is connected to the power and network accessible, the real-time monitoring of servers' performance can be realized through this management system, regardless of the situation of operation system. When the monitored server has abnormal event such as threshold exceeding, multiple ways of alarming, informing administrators and recording alarming events into system can be realized, which can facilitate the consulting of administrators, discover and eliminate the possible system failures, ensure the servers' long-term stable and reliable operation. The advantages of this paper's server management system are more obvious in the environment of massive distributed servers and centralized management. This paper first makes a brief introduction to the research status of the server management domain home and abroad. Based on the careful analysis of traditional server management method, its shortcomings are pointed out. Then the detailed implementation rules of this paper's theoretical basis (IPMI protocol) and its huge advantages brought to server management are deeply studied. And based on the above studies, with the combination of theory and practical significance of the development of server remote management software, a server management system solution based on IPMI protocol is designed, and the system's critical problems are analyzed and solved. At last, the status of the system's practical application is given.
