With the rapid improvement of information technology, the concept of smart tourism was emerged. Theme park, as an important part of smart tourism, is developing very fast. Despite the large number and various types, most of the domestic theme parks still remain in old service systems, so that they fail to pay attention to tourists’ feelings. Especially when large quantities of tourists visit the parks, the traditional tourist guidance system is subjected to a great test, often leading to poor mobility, poor tourism experience, resources waste and other issues. However, in many Western countries, the use of smart tourist guidance system has been very common in theme parks, where information technology has been applied to service system inside parks, combined with app and wearable devices. These systems can certainly meet the various requirements of tourists.This paper aims at enhancing the development of traditional service systems in theme parks in China and building a smart tourist guidance system suitable for China, through studying the theme parks in developed countries in Europe and America.The first part of this paper discusses the researches related to theme parks, smart tourism and tourist guidance system. Then the second part describes the situation of traditional tourist guidance system in Chinese theme parks. Next, in the third part, I introduce the concept of service design to describe basic framework, design concept and objective of smart tourist guidance system. The fourth part takes the Walt Disney world as an example and analyses its smart tourist guidance system including foreground system, background system and tourist aggregation management system. It helps to build a complete smart tourist guidance system. In the fifth part of this paper, I select Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden as a specific case for further study and present the problems existing in its tourist guidance system. In the last part, I design a new smart tourist guidance system consisting of foreground system, as well as background system for Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden. I focus on the show greenhouse in the garden as tourists always gather in this area. Finally, I test the feasibility of this system.The smart tourist guidance system built in this paper focuses on solving three problems: 1. Helping governors control tourist flow scientifically and effectively and meet diverse requirements from tourists while not to disturb their tourism journey; 2. Helping governors handle tourist aggregation issues including reasonable allocation of tourism resources and flexible direction cards in accordance with different traffic burden; 3. Helping governors respond to emergencies quickly occurred in the park.The innovation of this paper shows in four ways: 1. Improving the status quo of traditional Chinese theme park from the point of its tourist guidance system; 2. Summing up the situation of traditional tourist guidance system in Chinese theme park; 3. Building a complete smart tourist guidance system on the basis of field investigation; 4. Designing a new smart tourist guidance system combined with Chinese fact on the basis of my research.
