During the operation of modern enterprise, departments have been in motion independently for a long time, and the underlying database management systems for data storing maybe diverse. With the expansion of the enterprise and the upgrade of the business, the architecture system of original data center, the system performance and storage capacity gradually cannot meet the needs of the business. Therefor, transformation and upgrade of enterprise information system is needed, while data migration is an important link. For data migration between heterogeneous databases, designing program based on database or data interface, or human input are common ways. For the former, developing cost is higher and reusability is lower. While, the latter need more time and more people, and it is difficult to guarantee the accuracy of the data. Because of XML’s various advantages in data description and data transmission, this thesis introduces the XML, which is meaningful for data migration.This thesis introduces the research status of data migration between heterogeneous databases, discusses, compares and analyzes the existing methods. For the problem in the process of data migration, such as incompatible format between heterogeneous databases, this thesis discusses how to solve and design the data migration model between heterogeneous databases. The model emphasizes on the key issues of the data migration, such as improving the exchange model of XML.Finally, this thesis completes metadata management in the process of data migration, realizes the bidirectional mapping between XML and database. The large data objects in data migration are specially processed and are made to be transmitted in an XML document.Finally, through an example of data migration between the heterogeneous databases, this thesis verifies and analyzes the migration results. We achieve the desired effect; provide certain guidance for the enterprise migration between heterogeneous databases.
