With the extensive application of electronic image technology and multimedia technology, nowadays the picture has become society’s main carrier to transmit information.But the huge amount of data contained in the image information has brought a lot of trouble to information transmission and storage. To solve this problem, many researchers find several image compression methods. Due to this demand, image compression technology is developing rapidly. Updating equipment accelerate the acquisition, it is increasing the amount of data the graphic image of the expansion of the trend, even more than the rate of expansion of production and hard disk drive and other storage devices. Based on this, the compression encoding algorithm for image compression and image has always been one of the hot fields of computer researchers to study.This paper introduces the background and significance of this topic, and the research status of image compression technology, and introduces the current situation of the development of image compression techniques based on wavelet transform, finally the main research contents and structure are given; after the introduction of the related theory knowledge, packet classification principle, image compression method including image compression, principle changes of several common encoding, and two kinds of image compression standard now commonly used: JPEG and JPEG2000, and finally introduces the evaluation method of image compression and two relevant indexes; the third thing、also the most important content, is the summary of the design of the system, including the overall framework and every module of the system, together with the function of this system that divided into three major modules, the specific division is introduced in the last section, and each module in accordance with the principle. We need can be divided into the three modules transform, quantization, coding, in accordance with this order the; fourth thing we do is the detailed design of the system and implementation, including system for each module, the flow chart and some of the key algorithms of the implementation of the code; the fifth thing, is test and analysis of the system, gives the related test data and analysis concluded. Finally, summary and outlook, this chapter mainly contents in thispaper are summarized, and points out the deficiency of this article, pointed out the future research direction.In this paper, the whole system is made up of three modules, namely, the DCT-based image compression module, wavelet transform based image compression module,Calculation and evaluation module. We introduce details of the image pre-knowledge, color space conversion, DCT transform, quantization, Huffman coding, wavelet transform encoding. Finally we program the image compression system. In our system, we compare based on DCT transform image compression technology with based on wavelet transform image compression technology through image quality using the technology or not. Analysis of experimental results, both of them have a good image compression rate. With optimization techniques, DCT transform compression technology doesn’t have distortion while the wavelet transform technology has a slight distortion.
