About 100,000 categories of insects are estimated in Yunnan, including 600 categories of butterflies. But, more and more deteriorative ecological environment and more and more ardent butterfly commerce make lots of rare categories drop decrease, even deracination. In order to better protect them, it is a significantly scientific research worth, based on papilionaceous formal character, to identify its category so as to research their living habit. However, because it is a very difficult thing to store and transmit the enormous image data of insects, we must encode and compress them.Being based upon the foundation of a great deal literatures, above all, the paper summarizes image compressive theory, appraise method of the image compressive impact and research development of the wavelet image encoding method. Afterward, for at present in common use Huffman coding, run length encoding, N order context adaptive arithmetic encoding, DPCM coding etc. four kinds of static image compression methods make compare and analysis. Next, the paper researches more embedded wavelet theory, especially, aim at 2-D disperse wavelet static image compression application come down to the selection of wavelet, the extension of boundaries, the levels of decompression deal with discussion, and educe relate conclusion. Into the bargain, the paper make some research for embedded zerotree wavelet theory, which is bring forward by Shapiro, and use wavelet transform, EZW encoding, Huffman encoding, N order context adaptive arithmetic encoding to compress a static image. In the end, the paper discusses SPIHT encoding method theory and makes experiment.Using VC++6.0 or Matlab language realize 2-D wavelet image transform and untransformed, Huffman encoding and decoding ,N order context adaptive arithmetic encoding and decoding, run length encoding and decoding, DPCM encoding and decoding, and wavelet transform, EZW encoding, Huffman encoding, N order context adaptive arithmetic encoding to compress a static image, directly get actual compressive /reconstructiveimage, the compression ratio and psnr objective appraise index.
