With the development of simulation technology, the application of semi-physical simulation becomes more and more extensive. Semi-physical simulation is a specific way of simulation which is between mathematical simulation and physical simulation. It has not only the flexible deformation capacity, which origins from mathematical simulation, but also the feature of real time just like physical simulation. In the field of power electronics, there is a rapid development in production, resulting in more demand of semi-physical simulation instead of mathematical simulation. In this paper, by analyzing the principle of semi-physical simulation, a new hardware platform of semi-physical simulation intends to be designed which is combined with the requirements of typical power electronic circuits.Firstly, the principle of semi-physical simulation is illustrated as well as the current situation of the development of semi-physical simulation. There are many excellent semi-physical simulation platforms abroad, while they are too expensive and special for students in universities. As a result, for the purpose of power electronic device, a new platform of semi-physical simulation is built based on FPGA which has a great feature of real time.With introducing the requirements of a typical power electronic circuit, the components and the system architecture is confirmed. Way of communication between the boards is also designed by analyzing the requirements of correspondence in the whole system. Specially, to the serial communication between FPGA board with DA board and DO board, an improved type of SPI is proposed. By designing the hardware circuit of each board, a prototype of the hardware platform of semi-physical simulation is successfully built.After the design of this new platform, functional verification is also determined. At first, the improved type of SPI is feasible in this system. On the other hand, due to the multiple FPGA chips on the FPGA board, the cascade JTAG interface is performed during the verification. The function of AD board is also tested.Last but not least, a hardware in loop experiment is made by using this new platform. The control object is a power electronic circuit of 10KV STATCOM. Comparing with the simulation result of MATLAB, it verifies that this platform can be used.
