In recent years, with the popularity of smart phones, a variety of mobile applications continues to emerge and into our lives. The development of mobile Internet has greatly changed the way of people’s life. More and more applications integrates instant messaging feature that allows users to communicate with each other.(Wechat, QQ are the most popular instant messaging tools in China. According to a web survey in May 2014, the usage of Wechat in China internet users is 65%. This means there are still a large number of people that haven’t joined mobile Internet social network. Among these people, there are many elderly people that don’t use smart phone because of their knowledge structure or health reasons. The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement companion device software which can run on the Android platform, which is easy to use by elderly people. A smart companion device which equips with the software can connect to a mobile client or Wechat client. Users can send or receive text, voice, video, pictures, and music files etc. between a smart companion device and a mobile client. Moreover, users can communicate with live voice call or live video call between a smart companion device and a mobile client. Thus, more people are added to mobile Internet family. The software is also integrated entertainment features such as online video, Internet radio, and online news etc. It also has the capability of connecting to health devices such as blood pressure monitor, blood glucose meter, so that people with chronic diseases can get proper health care. In the end, the software provides remote assistant features which allow the device administrator to do simple device management work.First of all, the thesis introduces the research and development status of XMPP protocol, mobile instant system, and mobile platform. Secondly, the XMPP protocol is studied systematically. Then the thesis defines the key requirements and software architecture, and designs and implements the software. Finally, the thesis summarizes the work of the project and the future direction of development and future work.
