As a sketchbook, Qi Jiu Xu Wen was written in the middle of the Southern Song Dynasty. It contains the literary anecdotes, articles, poems and yarns from the 10th to the 13th century, which is of great reference value in studying the society of Song Dynasty. In view of the shortcomings in the present study, this thesis conducts a research on Qi Jiu Xu Wen based on a documentary analysis, which is divided into five chapters.Chapter I inspects the book’s spread in Ming and Qing Dynasty. According to the historical investigations in the bibliographic description and the materials quoted in other books, it is found that the book is mainly spreaded in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. We have also paid attention to the author and the title of the book, and come to a conclusion that the statement of "the author is Chen Hu" and the title "Xi Tang Ji Qi JiuXu Wen" appeared quite late.Chapter Ⅱ engages in the inspection of the book’s existing versions, making a systematic collation of them, as well as the elaborations and textual criticisms on some important ones. Based on the investigations of the nine versions, the conclusion of the first chapter has been confirmed.Chapter III takes "Chen Hu" as the research object. On the basis of the previous studies, a conclusion is drawn that the author of Qi Jiu Xu Wen is not Chen Hu, who was only a copyist in Ming Dynasty.Chapter IV investigates the literatures cited in Qi Jiu Xu Wen, with an aim to study its constitution, and dissects the previous view that the book was a colletion of many excerptions from other books. All the entries are inspected in this chapter, with an attempt to find out the literature resources. Through the study, it is found that the book does not have a clear writing style, of which the majority is extracted from other books.Chapter V discusses the book’s historical value. Through the analysis of the detailed contents of the book, we consider that it is of great reference value in the following three aspects:historical data, documentology and miscellaneous notes.
