| Lou Zhufeng(1911-1966) is a famous linguist and religious scholar in China. Meanwhile, he is a progressive and very successfully editor and publisher and has attained a high position and imposes a profound influence in China’s modern and contemporary publishing history. His editing career was winding and complicated and witnessed the development of China’s editing and publishing industry. Over his 60-year editing career, Lou Zhufeng tried many editing roles in different industries and constantly adjusted his editing behavior to let it match with the work nature and requirements of that industry. He attached paramount importance on the quality of books. Owing to this, he has published a great number of high quality and grade books. Besides, he emphasized filed survey and put a high value on the summary of editing experience. Moreover, he can integrate theory with practice and rationally distill the experience, thus forms a self-featured and practical instructive editing ideology.Luo Zhufeng started the editing and publishing activities since college. It was at this period, his passion for editing and publishing industry was activated. Good education and interest made him have the necessary quality for specializing in editing and publishing. After the founding of New China, Luo Zhufeng officially entered into publishing industry and became more and more mature in thinking. The publishing of the famous books he contributed like Cihai, the Chinese People’s Dictionary, the Chinese Dictionary and the Religion Part of the China’s Encyclopedia got a roaring reputation in academia and established him as a great master in editing and publishing industry.In this dissertation, by combining Luo Zhufeng’s editing practice and works, and the using of research methods like case study, literature analysis, qualitative analysis, and experience summary, it tries to systematically sort out and summarize Luo Zhufeng’s main editing activities and summarizes and analyzes the editing concept he reflected during his editing practice. This dissertation consists of six parts. The introduction gives a brief account of the reason of the topic, the research significance, research status, and methodology. The second chapter briefly summarizes and analyzes Lup Zhufeng’s editing career and divides it into three periods: the start of editing and publishing work during the wartime, the dictionary editing period, and the diversified editing period. Besides, it also states and analyzes the features of his editing activities. The third chapter mainly discusses Luo Zhufeng’s editing activities and achievements as a dictionary editor and focuses the special experience and significance he got from dictionary editing activities. The fourth chapter summarizes Luo Shufeng’s editing activities on religion books. In this field, he proposed the importance of combing thought emancipation, dynamic survey, and static research and integrating professional writers and editors. The fifth chapter studies the editing concept that Luo Zhufeng advocated on essay editing. The sixth chapter discusses the publisher literacy and publishing reform Luo Zhufeng proposed. For example, the reform on publishing system and distribution channels. Luo Zhufeng’s rigorous editing behavior and advanced editing ideology have a certain significance for today’s publishing industry. |
