Internet popular language is not only part of the network pop-culture, but also an embodiment of Internet users’ practices of public discourse. In Internet, the free market of views and opinions, non-elite group has gained extensive po wer of discourse for the first time, and because of this, their demands of expression has been satisfied more than ever. Then Internet popular language emerged, and has gradually become a carrier of public opinion and value judgements towards public affairs due to its characteristics of equal participation, critical judgement and public concern. In this thesis, there is a systemic arrangement of the annual lists of Top Ten Internet Popular Language from 2005 to 2014. To analyze and explain the impact of network popular language on the construction of China’s Internet public realm, I have combined the case analysis of examples of Internet popular language concerning public affairs from the perspective of public sphere’s construction, with the application of relative theories of sociology and communication. The thesis has shown that there are three main topics relating to public opinion: moral abnormality, public power abuse and anti-corruption, as well as livelihood issues, and that the diffusion of network popular languages is driven by social mentality like the demand for public expression and group identification, which is explained in the case analysis of the series of Fang X. Though Internet popular language is also a powerful driving force in expanding public participation and pushing forward the de velopment of public affairs, we should not neglect its negative influences like group polarization and irrational expression which consequently cause cyber-violence and social tagging. Therefore, I have offered several pieces of advice in guiding the standardized communication of Internet popular language, in order to truly realize its objective of conveying public opinions and achieve better result of public participation.
