With the development of three-dimensional battlefield simulation technology, it is difficult for the traditional 2D plotting system to meet the current demand of 3D plotting visualization. So there is an urgent need to establish a complete set of 3D military label system, which should adapt to the battlefield situation information of 3D plotting and display. But at present the research of 3D military symbol plotting technology stays on the construction of the standard model and a few of the irregular arrow marks, while the technological research on other types of 3D military symbols is not very perfect. The existing 3D military symbol plotting tool is still far less than the requirements of battlefield situation plotting system in integrity and ease of use.This paper is focused on the research and building-up of a 3D military plotting system and its main contents are as followed:To meet requirements of combining 3D military symbol plotting with terrain, the architecture of the 3D military symbol plotting system is designed, including two parts: the construction of 3D terrain and the rendering of 3D military symbol plotting. Among them the terrain construction is premise and foundation of the research on 3D military symbol plotting.We study the method of extraction and storage data in S57 nautical chart cartographic. On the base of the analysis of the data structure of S57 chart and storage standards, the article gives the methods of nautical chart cartographic data extraction, and proposed a method of using container to manage and query depth points data. Solving the problems of comparing and querying large amounts of depth points data, improving the efficiency of identifying gaps in latitude and longitude coordinates of the soundings in nautical chart cartographic.We study the depth points data creating digital elevation modal method, putting forword an improved TIN interpolation algorithm, the problems of creating and interpolating terrain triangular meshes are solved where depth points data are missing, design a method of two and three dimensional terrain and data synchronization, to implement a function of two and three dimensional synchronization for the visualization system.We study the construction and rendering of 3D military symbol technology. Putting forward a new drawing method based on triangular recursive subdivision, which divides the military symbols into two types of small surface patches. In addition, we can adjust the number of recursion algorithm based on visual demand, and the algorithm will become widely used in all kinds of 3D military symbol plotting, at the same time meets the real-time requirements of the visualization system based on the experimental results.Putting forward a design idea to separate the data and display process of the drawing system, design and implement a 3D military symbol plotting system, and test on the system performance by experimental vertification.The design of 3D military symbol plotting system architecture adopts to the principle of open and extensible, supports of additions and changes for different kinds of military symbols, adopts to the need of development and changes, dynamic adjustment for the number of recursion algorithm, load and dynamic combination of basic military symbol graphic, improves real- time and visibility of the system.
