Because fiber optic gyroscopes(FOGs)have so much excellent performance, such as solid-state, high-precision, quick-start, high-reliability, low-price and so on, which make them received more and more attention both at home and abroad. And the fiber optic gyroscopes have found use in a wide range of applications, from national defense and military to industry and civilian use.And there has a tendency that the fiber optic gyroscopes will replace the other type of gyroscopes. Optical fiber ring is the sensitive component in fiber optic gyroscope, and the stress distribution of the optical fiber ring determines the precision of optical fiber gyroscopes, control effect of the tension control system have a significant impact on the optical fiber ring’s stress distribution,making winding tension control a key technique in fiber winding. So the control performance of the tension control system affects the precision of fiber optic gyroscopes.The piezoelectric ceramic and AC servo motor have the characteristics of highresolution and fast-dynamic-response, combined the tension control system must having high control precision, a new tension control scheme is presented in this paper. It preliminary control the fiber tension by controlling the speed of the takeup wheel and loosen-up wheel, and further control by controlling the output of piezoelectric ceramic. Some kind of tension control actuators are discussed in this paper, the new tension control scheme has advantages of fast response, high control accuracy, which ensure the tension control in the process of fiber winding.The structure of the fiber tension control system is designed, which is divided into take-up and loosen-up wheel module, tension-detection module and piezoelectric ceramic-execution module, and each module is designed. According to the law of fiber tension control, fuzzy PID controller is designed. The control model system is established through experimental method, simulation is carried out. It shows that three kinds of control algorithm can satisfy the requirement of system design, and fuzzy PID control algorithm has advantages of short setting time and low overshoot.Finally, a series experiments of the tension control system is done. And we find that each control algorithm can satisfy the using demand of the system, their tension control precision can reach 0.5 g. And after joining the control of piezoelectric ceramic micro platform, its control precision can be increased to 0.3 g. But there is one shortage, the set time of all the algorithms is a little long, is about 2.8 seconds. At the same time, the overshoot of PID control algorithm is too big, it is about 50%, the other two algorithms are much better, it is about 10% to 20%. So fuzzy PID controller joined the control of piezoelectric ceramic micro platform is the most suitable for the design of fiber tension control system, the tension control accuracy can reach 0.3 g.
