Mobile multimedia applications have recently attracted numerous interests in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) supporting quality-of-service (QoS) communications. In TDMA-based MANETs, time slot assignment is essential to provide the enough bandwidth to meet the traffic flow demand and support collision-free QoS flow transmission. This paper proposes an on-demand QoS routing protocol to support TDMA-based bandwidth reservation (QoS-TDMA), our research aims to find an effective time slot assignment schemes and a functional route selecting process along a route.A distributed time slot assignment scheme, bandwidth estimation method and routing discovery process are presented to support multimedia communication and to satisfy QoS bandwidth requirement. The proposed time slot assignment algorithm can assign slots without collision and choose free slots that have the minimal impact on the other links’free slots. It can enhance slot reuse efficiency and improve the performance of network. The proposed bandwidth estimation is simple and efficiency. It can provide the basis for the destination node to choose the path that has the mostly maximum bandwidth. The routing process, including HELLO process, RREQ process and RREP process, uses the proposed slot assignment scheme and bandwidth estimation method to implement the On-Demand QoS Routing Protocol with Bandwidth Reservation. Also, we use the method of set to describe the network model, interference model and our protocol (QoS-TDMA), by which the descriptions of these themes will be more simple and accurate than many other papers. The simulation results show that using proposed QoS-TDMA protocol could improve the performance of the network, especially the network throughput and loss ratios. Simultaneously, we use the experiment to find out when the proposed slot assignment algorithm will have a greater advantage, comparing with the reference slot assignment algorithm.
