Crop image acquisition is the basis of crop growth monitoring. However, the power supply and data transmission is difficult because of vast farmland area and basic facilities absence. A solar powered remote maize crop image acquisition system was designed to solve these problems in this paper. It is based on ARM embedded system and transmit data with GPRS. The research work is as following:1. The design of the image acquisition device which working at remote peer. Through type selection of processor, camera, solar panel, battery, DTU(GRPS Data Transmit Unit) etc.,to build solar remote acquisition device. Measures of lowering the hardware’s power dissipation is: The first, choose the processor with the multiple power mode, so that processor could be low-power condition when it is idle. The second, design a power management device to switch the power supply of camera and DTU.2. The design of the communication protocol. In order to carry out the communication between server software and remote acquisition device, the special protocol is designed to implement all the functions, such as query device’s status, set image resolution, set image compress level, update capture schedule etc.3. The design of system software. In accordance with the basic requirement of software engineering, proceed demand analysis, overall design, detailed design, coding and testing.Solve several problems, including multiple thread access shared resource concurrently,determine next scheduled capture time, reduce traffic on GPRS.Experiments show that the proposed remote maize crop image acquisition system can accomplish the acquisition of filed maize crop image with low average power consumption and less time.
