Multi-resolution modeling is an important technique to meet the modern simulation application, and mesh simplification is an important method of multi-resolution modeling. Currently, there are many mesh simplification algorithms, one of which is usually applied to a particular area of the models, but not good at other areas, and the simplification operation is the same to the domain of and out of the users’ interest. A more universal simplification algorithm is required to support multi-resolution modeling in terms of multi-resolution three-dimensional model base with rich model types.This paper presented an effectively semi-automated mesh simplification algorithm according to a detailed study of the multi-resolution modeling and mesh simplification algorithm. It provided automatic error correction and user-controlled error correction. User may choose the appropriate algorithm as the different types of the model. Not only the quality of the simplified model has been improved, but the result of the simplification may adjust according to the user’s wishes, and could displaying the user’s interest field in high-resolution. This method does well in supporting multi-resolution modeling of the resourceful weapon model base, which heightens the reusability of the resources.With the increasing number of battlefield simulation resources and the deepening study of point cloud technique, three-dimensional military symbol and battlefield special effect, the previous model base could hardly meet the requirement of more resource types. In this paper, the author designed and improved the multi-resolution three-dimensional model base by enriching its functions to support more resource types and provide opener interface. Apart from the support of the three-dimensional mesh model, the reading, display and storage function of the point cloud documents and the special effect documents were added. Moreover, a new category was added, namely three-dimensional military symbol. To sum up, this research can provide vigorous support for the storage and management of various model types and the battlefield simulation.
