With the rapid development of agricultural modernization, farmland soil pit data, as a key ingredient in agricultural research data, is vital to agricultural water-saving irrigation study. However, currently farmland soil pit experimental data is mainly collected manually, the data collection process is very inefficient, and the data collected is often inaccurate. In this paper, a Java EE-based automated collection and management software was developed for farmland soil pit data collection, query, statistics, analysis and input/output. This software is not only able to monitor soil pit experiment data in real time, but also can manage and share collected data among researchers. Therefore, it can play an important role in providing data for water-saving irrigation related practices research works. In detail, the major study works and contributions of this dissertation are as follows:(1) In order to realize the automated collection and management of farmland soil pit experimental data, an automated hardware system for soil pit data collection was implemented by deploying the embedded ARM development board, A/D conversion modules and various sensors. Moreover, the framework of the corresponded automated collection and management software for farmland soil pit experimental data was designed according to the functional and non-functional requirements.(2) The core functional modules and key mechanisms were proposed, and each functional module’s key business processes were defined in this software platform. The entity-relationship model and data tables were designed for supporting database, the security mechanism combining authentication, authorization and access control, as well as the TCP/IP protocol packages between the lower-end hardware and the upper-end software.(3) By utilizing Java EE technologies such as JSF, JBoss Seam, JPA and EJB3.0, etc., the automated collection and management software for farmland soil pit experimental data was developed in layered aspects as data layer, business layer and presentation layer. Base on socket communication mechanisms, data transmission between upper-end software and lower-end hardware system was implemented. A functional and performance test was conducted, and test results show that: this software meets the real time and accuracy requirements of automated collection and management for farmland soil pit experimental data.
