As an important way of information transfer, the barcode technology has been widely used in the circulation of commodities management and industrial production with the rapid development of modern science and technology. In recent years, the digital signal processing(DSP) technology has attracted increasing attention due to the obvious advantages such as good performance, easy installation, smart volume work in conjunction with other devices and significantly reducing the hardware cost. Therefore, the high-speed and high-tech areas of production are in desperate need of barcode recognition systems based on the digital signal processer platform, particularly, in the high-tech field.In practical applications, the barcode images are always combined with complex background, additionally, frequent barcode tilt and damage, which will result in failures in barcode recognition and lead to unpredictable results. Since it is difficult for the conventional algorithms to deal with complicated applications with high efficiency after transplanted to the DSP platforms, which largely limits its practical applications, an algorithm for the high-speed visual barcode recognition system on the basis of DSP platforms is proposed in this paper, and it consists of three parts: the barcode image preprocessing, barcode localization and barcode decoding.Three pretreatment methods were studied in terms of the barcode image preprocessing, i.e., barcode contrast enhancement, image denoising barcode and barcode image binarization. The most suitable algorithm for the system in this paper was selected via pretreatment methods on different algorithms for each of the theoretical analysis and simulation system.For the barcode localization part, the common characteristics of the sub-regional multi-localization algorithm were studied. A fast barcode localization algorithm based on the DSP platform is proposed to solve the possible complex background in industrial production, in addition to barcode tile and breakage. The principle is based on the barcode morphological feature analysis of the DSP operation characteristics, and the localization is finally completed through screening and scanning after getting the regional features. In the regional analysis section, an analytical DSP method based on fast area algorithm was presented, avoiding the large computational operations of the traditional localization algorithm such as Hough transform, edge extraction.In the barcode decoding part, a fast barcode recognition algorithm based on the width of space that avoids the rotation and projection of the traditional algorithm was presented. The proposed fast barcode recognition algorithm can be applied in the damaged barcodes. Furthermore, varied decoding algorithms were studied according to different codes to boost efficiency.The algorithm simulation for the high-speed visual barcode recognition system was completed and its functionality was verified. All of the algorithms are then transferred to the DSP platform and employed in the smart camera, which has been tested for the practicabilities. Experimental results showed that under complex background, e.g., barcode and even barcode damaged tilt, the algorithms can quickly and accurately locate the barcode in the smart camera. To the best of our knowledge, it has not been reported to employ the fast barcode recognition algorithm based on the DSP platform in the smart camera.
