The conventional radar is being challenged with the development of modern electronic warfare in modern war. Traditional radar signal emitted by enemy monitoring, interfering, and attacking. Therefore, passive radar characterized itself which does not transmit signal gradually is being paid more attention. Civilian signal based passive radar is one of the popular direction. This paper focuses on the passive radar based on GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications) signal. It uses the mobile signal as a radiation source, detects targets with the theory of bistatic radar detection. The GSM system is a signal with the international standard, it has its own coding, modulating and transmitting rules, and the signal waveform has its own characteristicsThe main work of this paper is summarized as follows:1. A deep study of the characteristics of GSM channel and the feasibility of radar signal source. For GSM signal as the radar source, resolution of distance and velocity of the GSM signal are analyzed, the feasibility of the GSM signal as the radar source is verified. With the studying of the wireless channel protocol, broadcast channel is chosen as a representative signal.2. Algorithm simulation of passive radar based on GSM signal processing module. A simulation about the direct path interference cancellation and ambiguity function is completed referring to the normal passive radar processing module. For direct path cancellation module, facing the problem of the direct signal impure, a purification algorithm based on demodulation is proposed, a simulation is completed to verify the feasibility of the algorithm. For ambiguity function module, an improvement of algorithm is used depending on the range of detection parameters and the environment of simulation to enhance the efficiency of the algorithm.3. The feasibility study of using multiple GSM base as radar source to locate target. A simulation of the single source localization range is completed, more GSM bases are used to expand the radar detection range. For the co-channel interference problem owing to the different base frequency allocation, a new scheme is proposed and a simulation of the scheme is finished to verify the feasibility of detection by using multiple base signals. Meanwhile, the simulation also verified the improvement of positioning accuracy by using multi-source localization.
