This thesis firstly introduce the background of the topic researched, namely with the rapid development of the modern electronic system, the high performance frequency synthesizers are becoming more and more important, especially in radar systems. Whether the frequency synthesizer is reliable or not would decide the performance of the whole radar system. Then the thesis introduces the development status of the radar system frequency synthesizer, which would be the foreshadowing and comparing of the thesis.The thesis then introduce the development of the modern frequency synthesis technology, including the basic theory, the normally frequency synthesis ways and some important frequency synthesis technology indexes and so on. Generally speaking, frequency synthesis technology includes the direct frequency synthesis, the direct digital frequency synthesis, the indirect frequency synthesis technology and the mixture of the former technologies. The thesis then introduces the former frequency synthesis technology methods and mainly discusses the direct digital frequency synthesis technology, analysising its advantages and disadvantages, the basic feature and so on.The thesis introduce the target of the project in chapter three, including the center frequency or the frequency band of the output signal, the phase noise index, the spurs level, the linearity index and some other frequency synthesizers’ indexes. Besides, the project also limites the volume of the frequency synthesizer module and the interfaces of this module are also fixed. Then the thesis discusses how to realize this frequency synthesizer module of the Ku band radar system. Design the scheme, choose the ICs for the module and so on. The thesis mainly introduces AD9914, including its advantages and disadvantages. Then the thesis shows the structure of this module and the schematics designed by the software of Altium desiger 08. At last, after debugging and testing this module, this module’s indexes meet the requirement of this project. The thesis also shows the phenomena and process while testing the module, showing as more pictures as possible to analysis problems. The module may have so many questions need to be solved, recording them and solving them in the next step. And then the frequency synthesizer module is tested in the whole Ku band radar system to ensure whether it meets the requirements of the project.At last, the thesis also summarizes the difficulties that encountered and the disadvantages of this module. Then the thesis proposes a better way to improve this module for paving the further study. Besides, the thesis will look ahead the next work on the frequency synthesis technology of the modern radar systems.
