Nowadays, slow light as a new technology has made a great development from the original exploration of a scientific theory to promising application prospects in the field of scientific research. Compared with other generating mechanisms of slow light, the structure of optical fiber ring resonator has the advantages of simple structure, ease of integration, high sensitivity and strong controllability, etc. This paper mainly studied the theory of optical fiber double loop coupled resonator slow light based on the coupled-resonator-induced transparency and did the experiments. Besides, the applications of optical fiber ring resonator slow light in gas sensing field had been analyzed. The main research contents of this paper included:(a) Comparatively analyzing of the advantages and disadvantages of various generating mechanisms of slow light. Meanwhile, emphatically introducing the development and applications of coupled-resonator-induced transparent technology. Carrying out research on the related basic theory of coupling resonance induced transparent effect.(b) Further researching on optical fiber ring resonator slow light effects of various parameters on slow light properties. The impact of cycle number, coupler spectral ratio, ring loss, coupler additional loss on the system was analyzed in detail. Finally, double loop structure with the respective coupler ratios 90:10,50:50 was confirmed. Through the analysis of the system loss, ring loss and additional loss of coupler affected the system transmittance. However, they had no effect on the delay characteristics of slow light.(c) Setting up the experimental system and using time domain measurement method to detect the delay time of the optical fiber ring resonator slow light. The experiment achieved the maximum delay time of 34.18ns with the wavelength of 1550. lOnm and the error was 0.96 ns. It was almost in line with the theoretical analysis.(d) Studying the mechanism of improving gas sensing sensitivity with slow light. Theoretical model was established between group velocity and gas absorption coefficient. The experiment on gas absorption coefficient measurement was carried out. The traditional system of gas absorption coefficient was 0.36. The new system of gas absorption coefficient where slow light was used reached to 2.41, which increased by 6.73 times compared with the traditional method. And the preliminary measurement experiment of gas concentration has been carried out.In this paper, a new way of gas concentration detection which used optical fiber ring resonator slow light was proposed. It not only afforded a new thought for the applications of slow light technology in the field of sensing, but also had a positive influence on the gas concentration sensor.
