Nowadays people are disturbed by many problems of modern society, such as rampant vehicle theft and inundant electronic wastes. In this paper, we propose the idea of PhoneInside, which doesn’t need special device, but leverages an obsolete smartphone to build a cheap and effective vehicle anti-theft system. After fixed in vehicle body with a car charger, and then utilize the powerful sensor system of smartphone, such as accelerator, gyroscope, the smartphone can detect possible theft, and send alarming and tracking messages to the vehicle owner or the police. Moreover, a novel technique, called Driving Reappearance, is developed for vehicle tracking. The target (the obsolete smartphone inside the stolen vehicle) first captures the driving behaviors of the thief and related vehicle mobility characteristics, and transmits such information to the tracker (a smartphone of the tracking person). While sending such messages, the smartphone may exploit Vehicular ad hoc network which is structured by vehicles (nodes). The smartphone can join in this network and make it bigger.3G/4G network is another way to transmit messages. Then, the tracker locates the target through cooperative localization, and then guides the tracking person to drive to the stolen vehicle, by following the thief’s driving from the last known landmark. Most current Positioning systems are based on GPS(Global Positioning System) which has two obvious weakness. The first one is it can be easily recognized and disabled. The second is it cannot locate vehicle in the indoor environment such as park In addition, we discover turning at intersection both has obvious mobility characteristics and unique location features, which brings plenty of landmarks and greatly improves the performance of Dead Reckoning. We implement a real PhoneInside system on Android smartphones, and validate its effectiveness. The results proves Driving Reappearance can greatly reduce the localization errors and the consumed time in vehicle tracking.
