With intelligent data transmission, fusion and acquisition, wireless sensor networks make it a reality of the link between physical world and the binary-information world. International scholars have paid great attentions to wireless sensor networks, and the current wireless sensor networks are in the trend of rapid development. However, due to the limitations and constraints in network structures and resources, wireless sensor networks are very easy to be attacked by the adversary. Thus, how to protect the networks and ensure the security of wireless sensor networks will be made particularly important than ever. This paper introduces the background of the key management, including current focuses in WSN of both the domestic and the foreign experts. The paper also gives a clear explanation for the structures of networks and nodes, and highlights security problems exist in the wireless sensor networks. The paper also classifies and compares many different key management schemesThe paper proposes a two-tier structure key management scheme for subgroup networks with the concept that different networks in different regions may have different security requirements. This scheme can reduce the impact of captured nodes to the specific group, and increase the stability in the pre-distribution of random keys. Then a range and security mechanism is designed to improve the resilience of nodes in groups to node attacks.A cluster-based key management scheme in WSN is designed by using the hybrid technology of both public keys and symmetric keys based on the EG scheme and the EGC scheme. This scheme can save the energy consumption in a great extent by reducing the sensor nodes’ transmission radius, and also decrease the possibility that a singe node or multiple nodes are captured. Compared with those early schemes, these works can greatly reduce storage cost.
