Nowadays, with the popularity of portable devices and integrated multimedia devices, it made more demands for the display size of portable devices. LCD occupied the display terminal market below ten inches, but the LCD screen can no longer have a greater expansion. And information-sharing on portable devices asked the following requirements: smaller, larger display size, high efficiency and so on. These are not conventional display technology can achieve. Micro-projection technology is revolutionary portable display device. It has a small size, a large display screen, probably do not have high light efficiency. With the development of technology, the micro-projection must be an integral component on a mobile device in the future. In this thesis, the most work was designing micro projectors, especially the optical system can be embedded micro projectors portable devices. In small size range to made projection system achieve high efficiency.1. In the beginning of the article introduced the design and research of the significance of micro projectors, also introduced the display chip DMD and light source LED, and analyse the good aspect of using LED with DMD.2. Introduce the optical design of non-imaging optics theory, especially the application of optical etendue in the design of micro projectors. This paper also introduced the design of the evaluation parameters and design goals.3. This paper presents two design options about the micro-projection optical design. One is fly-eye lens as the main optical element, work with dichroic mirror; another is using a glowstick, work with TIR prism. The design work of projection lens was finished in software ZEMAX. Modeling and simulation of two optical systems is carried out in tracepro software, and get the result of optical efficiency of two options for 8.99% and 12.2%, respectively.4.This paper made a test of some optical components, include two LED products made by CREE and luminous. And made a test of the efficiency of projection system, the result is 15.6%. And estimated the optical efficiency of optical system was about 8%, comparison with the simulation results, it was relatively close.Finally, I summarized the work, and made some advices to the two design options about the micro-projection optical design and make the arrangement of future work. Particular, do the work about how to improve the optical efficiency of glowstick and TIR prism.
