In recent years,with the rapid development of Internet and computer technology,education field began to attach importance to informatization and technicalization in teaching process, thus a growing number of network teaching platform and computer-aided teaching software constantly emerge. As new teaching methods, these teaching systems brought boundless vitality for the traditional teaching. However, some problems in these systems should not be ignored, for example, learning resources are lack of effective organization and management, and the structure of subject knowledge doesn’t be well demonstrated. Ontology, as a conceptual model, describes various objects, objects’ attributes and relationships between objects in specific domain.Applying ontology in teaching systems can enhance the semantics of subject knowledge and realize the sharing and reuse of resources. It can also contribute to the realization of intelligence and personalization in teaching or learning systems. Thus, this paper examines the ontology and its applications in the filed of education subjects. The main content includes the following aspects:First, through research of ontology theory and analysis of several ontology construction methods, combining with the features of subject knowledge, this paper proposes a new method constructing subject knowledge ontology. This method primarily considers two related ontology’s applications in teaching domain, including subject knowledge map and subject knowledge dictionary. The knowledge map can visually demonstrate knowledge structure, while the knowledge dictionary mainly provides semantic query service of subject knowledge. Based on these two applications,this ontology constructing method proposes a new thinking and does deep research in three aspects, including extraction of core concepts, division of concepts’ hierarchy and definition of concepts’ property.Second, the knowledge ontology of discrete mathematics is built, under the guidance of new ontology construction method. In the process of building ontology,firstly the content and structure characteristics of discrete mathematics courses are analyzed in detail, which will lays a good foundation for next step. Then, according to the proposed standards, extract and define the concepts and properties of ontology, and establish links between knowledge points.Last, based on the constructed ontology, design and realize a learning platform of discrete mathematics. The learning platform supports relational query of knowledge covered by discrete mathematics and return the query results graphically. It also builds concept maps showing the structural relationship of subject knowledge points.
