With the rapid development of wireless communication technology, wireless mesh network comes into being which combines the merits of WLAN and Ad-hoc network. Thanks to its advantages, such as self-organization, self-healing, low cost, wide coverage, wireless mesh network can be extensively applied in both military and civilian field. For wireless mesh point is an important device in wireless mesh network system, its performance will directly influence on the quality of the entire wireless communication system. After overall learning of wireless mesh network protocol, embedded Linux system development and analysis on the existing related domestic and foreign study, the thesis attempt to design wireless mesh point experimental platform based on PowerPC processor and optimize implementation of a new routing protocol. On the hardware platform, the thesis design key hardware circuit modules based on P1020 after comparing the different options. In the software level, it customizes the transplantation of the Linux operating system, including Bootloader. Then along with function demand of the mesh point, it realizes the connection between the backbone network and the client network, wireless parameters configuration and management, and security, this thesis respectively gives the concrete design and implementation of wireless module, network management module and security module including ESSID hiding, MAC address filtering technology and WPA2 encryption authentication technology. Then, it analyzes a new routing protocol of wireless mesh network dedicated BATMAN.ADV, and proposing an improvement solution based on sliding window protection optimization to reduce the routing convergence speed, and realizing in the system of network. Finally, the thesis builds a basic test environment in order to improve routing protocol and the function and performance of wireless mesh point. The data of test indicates that the improved BATMAN.ADV routing protocol does has certain promotion in the routing convergence speed, about two to four seconds. The one-hop access, multi-hop transmission and roaming switch of mesh points function normally. In the performance, the average throughput of the wireless mesh points system reaches 25.3 Mbps, the transmission speed is stable in a laboratory environment within a range of 45 meters, and the response time is below 0.5s. The overall system meets the design requirements, runs well and operates smoothly.
