With the development and popopularization of information technology in our lives, educational industry is developing towards the era of information, which brings great changes to the traditional teaching and learning model. Diverse information systems provide great convenience in enriching the learning methods and personalized learning for the students, and help to increase the interest and efficiency in learning. As a result, Electronic Schoolbag has a wide application prospect for its portable and informational advantages, which integrates the electronic books, e-learning tools and modern teaching service platform together. Nevertheless, the development of the Electronic Schoolbag is still in its infancy in the domestic market. On the one hand, the application process of Electronic Schoolbag is not clear and impersonal, which creates great limitations for the further application of it. On the other hand, the designs of current Electronic Schoolbag are mainly focus on the classroom learning, not involving any extracurricular learning process, the full range of students’ knowledge is still lacking.To solve the aforementioned problems, a new Electronic Schoolbag system is proposed in this paper, which is oriented by basic education and personalized out-of-class learning of students. The system employs Android-based Tablet PC to increase the operability and suitability, and designs a solution for extracurricular applications at the same time. The solution is based on the the actual needs of the student with their individualized out-of-class learning. Requirements analysis of this personalized out-of-class learning system is made firstly, respectively for the teachers and students, regarding requirements of the users, business, application scenario, functions, data and the performance. The teacher assigns extracurricular homework for students to practice, and the students can find their own problems through online practice, to carry out targeted review of themselves. And the system can help students with active out-of-class learning according to their own interests at the same time. Secondly, design of the overall system and detailed design of every module is given according to the above-mentioned requirements. Teachers assign homework to students through Practice Management module, and students find their weak points in learning through online practice. The system can make statistical analysis of the weak points, which will help the students to make a better understanding of everyone’s problems in their own learning. In the out-of-class learning stage, the system provides the students capability of independent reading, to attract their attention to learn and help to form an autonomous learning habit. Thirdly, we implement this learning system with Practice Management module, Incorrect Management module, and E-book Reading module based on the J2EE platform and MVC framework. Finally, we make detailed experiment through black-box testing, stress-simulation testing and real-world functional and performance testing, to know the application effect of the designed system. Analysis and experimental test shows that the proposed system can assist students with their personalized out-of-class learning, promote the learning efficiency by making complement and consolidated effect to the classroom learning, and enhance the students’ interest in out-of-class learning. The article studies the domestic Electronic Schoolbag in depth, and further promotes the use of Electronic Schoolbag as a template of application.
