The element of “role play ” in RPG games has existed since the human origin. With the rapid developing speed of game industry, the importance of researching on game theory is getting clear. While with RPG game’s high degree of freedom and interactivity forming narrative pattern as novels and movies, it has become a mainstream choice for game players experiencing emotion.This thesis researches on image design and experience in RPG game under the background of freedom and interactivity. Maslow’s demand theory suggests that people’s needs are various, it keeps moving forward and rising to the higher demand, when the player’s basic needs are satisfied, then the needs will quickly be replaced by the new demand. RPG game is well catering to the needs of the people, the needs of players are deepen with the game process.From primary aesthetic demand, entertainment needs to a high level of emotional identity, self-actualization needs, RPG game has become people’s dreams and ideals in the mapping in the virtual world, the reasonable catharsis has positive significance to people’s mental development, which Jungian psychology point of view confirms this.Free interactive RPG game not only digging out the subjective creativity of players, but also focusing on emotion commitment, which emphasis on the player’s immersion experience, in order to achieve the purpose of empathy.Players take activities and experience adventures in the limited open world provided by the designers.Immerse is an important means of RPG game, designers make full use of the it to increase the player’s emotional identity, getting deeper game experience.Players is not just in the game world explore and advent, they will also find and beat self, obtain others’ identity and self-actualization needs. Through the free to interact with the computer, the traditional game mode is no longer the goal for the players, the role of designers and players can convert each other finally.RPG game focuses on experience, the game’s view of the world, art style, theme and content, image design and so on are all around player’s experience, which is the goal of the game designers.In this thesis, image design, game experience are the breakthrough point, using literature research, case analysis, comparative research and so on, grasping the quintessence of RPG game "role-playing" problem, analyzing and summarizing indispensable to good game image design and the elements of gaming experience.Hoping this thesis can positively impact on the game designers design concept, development train of thought,and offering reference value.
